Co-infections with Plasmodium knowlesi and Other Malaria Parasites, Myanmar

To determine the frequency of co-infections with Plasmodium species in southern Myanmar, we investigated the prevalence of P. knowlesi. More than 20% of patients with malaria had P. knowlesi infection, which occurred predominantly as a co-infection with either P. falciparum or P. vivax.

Central carbon metabolism of Plasmodium parasites.

The central role of metabolic perturbation to the pathology of malaria, the promise of antimetabolites as antimalarial drugs and a basic scientific interest in understanding this fascinating example of highly divergent microbial metabolism has spurred a major and concerted research effort towards elucidating the metabolic network of the Plasmodium parasites. Central carbon metabolism, broadly c...

Chloroquine-Resistant Haplotype Plasmodium falciparum Parasites, Haiti

Plasmodium falciparum parasites have been endemic to Haiti for >40 years without evidence of chloroquine (CQ) resistance. In 2006 and 2007, we obtained blood smears for rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and filter paper blots of blood from 821 persons by passive and active case detection. P. falciparum infections diagnosed for 79 persons by blood smear or RDT were confirmed by PCR for the small sub...

Microreview Protein export from Plasmodium parasites

Many prokaryotic and eukaryotic intracellular pathogens survive by altering the host cell through the export of proteins. In contrast to the well-studied prokaryotic export systems, knowledge of protein export in eukaryotic pathogens is scant. The recent discovery that a short protein sequence targets a protein for export from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum has shed light on the pos...

Helminth Parasites Alter Protection against Plasmodium Infection

More than one-third of the world's population is infected with one or more helminthic parasites. Helminth infections are prevalent throughout tropical and subtropical regions where malaria pathogens are transmitted. Malaria is the most widespread and deadliest parasitic disease. The severity of the disease is strongly related to parasite density and the host's immune responses. Furthermore, coi...
